The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
